The great kilt (or belted plaid) is the original kilt of the Scottish Highlander dating back to the 1500s. The kilt consists of a long a piece of wool tartan fabric that is folded several times by hand to create layers  or pleats.  The wearer would lie down on the folded fabric, wrap the sides around their waist, then secure a belt or rope around their waist to secure the kilt. The lower portion kept the wearer modest while the upper portion could be used as a blanket, a rain cloak, a pouch to carry items, or secured over the shoulder when not needed. The wearer could pull out the pleats as needed to access the extra fabric to wrap around their body to protect from rain, snow and cold. At night, the kilt could be de-pleated to create a sleeping bag. It was truly the Highlanders' all purpose garment.
